Youth Mentoring

Guiding our Next Generation of Youth Toward Success.

The goal of all Stay Focused programs is to develop community bonds and build support systems. As a trusted organization, our foundation and success depends much on the institutions entrenched in our communities. With the help of Bakersfield Recreation & Parks Department, Bakersfield Probation Services, Bakersfield Police Department, Department of Human Services, Toys 4 Tots, Bakersfield Safe Streets Partnership, City Serve and other faith-based organizations have tremendously aided our ability to serve the community. These organizations make it possible for us to help families with crisis intervention, host community outreaches, and help end violence and curb the poverty in our neighborhoods. Our programs listed below offer aid to any difficulty an individual is facing.

Within the umbrella of Stay Focused is the Reach 4 Greatness (R4G) mentoring program. All Stay Focused programs develop community bonds and support systems, but the R4G programs focus specifically on developing the potentials of at-risk youths anywhere from 6-19 years old.

One-on-One School Mentoring:

This program matches a trained caring adult, who possesses good character, completes a personal interview, attends a two-hour “All About Mentoring Training”, and passes a Livescan background screening to a student. The students enrolled in this program are referred to Reach 4 Greatness by school staff. Once the mentor is matched with a student, he/she agrees to a twelve-month commitment to meet on campus one time per week and maintain a positive and consistent relationship with the student and the support staff. The purpose of this positive adult relationship is to provide the mentees with an adult that helps them further develop the necessary social and life skills related to their academics. More specifically, to have someone who is proud of them and encourages positive interactions with their peers and school staff.

School Group Mentoring:

The school-based Group Mentoring program was introduced as an effort to deliver the R4G curriculum to groups of youth on the school campus. At-risk youth facing challenges like truancy, tardiness, behavioral referrals, and dropouts were mostly referred to be part of these groups. Reach 4 Greatness offers support and encouragement during difficult times by helping students build problem-solving and resiliency skills.

Community Group Mentoring:

This takes place at the Stay Focused office at least once a week. A community partnership allows us to recover and serve high-risk graduated high school students. Using positive weekly lessons, lectures, and guest speakers, we inspire them to be responsible, productive citizens and provide opportunities to serve their local communities. This mentoring service is also provided to students that are not enrolled in a school serviced by R4G, high school students, or probation referrals, The topics are customized to address specific challenges of that student population. We also provide community service opportunities, conflict resolution (anger management), drug abuse workshops, life skills and job training, education, and vocational field trips.

School Assembly

Our school assemblies have high-energy and engaging events with music, video presentations, and a positive motivational message. In this way, we reach every student across schools with a universal message, hoping to bridge the diversity among students. Topics include, but are not limited to: “Character Counts!,” “Make Your Mark!,” “Dare to Dream”, “Vision must be bigger than excuses,” and “Empathy.”
